Jane Austen with 5000 cotton tapes

71 words from the opening paragraph, Chapter 1 of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice are woven onto 4000 cotton tapes and assembled in Austen’s face using only dressmaker pins. The background of the canvas is covered with 1000's of nametapes listing the 16 main characters including Fitzwilliam Darcy and Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

INSPIRED BY THE WORD Exhibition runs from 8th June - 30th September 2017 at Winchester Cathedral, SO23 9LS.

Recognised as one of the greatest writers of English literature the exhibition marks the 200th anniversary of Austen’s death and celebrates her life and work. Jane Austen will also appear on the new £10 note to be unveiled by the Bank of England at an event at Winchester Cathedral on 18th July 2017. Jane Austen died in Winchester on 18th July 1817 and is buried in the north nave aisle of the Cathedral.
