I had the pleasure of meeting fashion designer Dame Zandra Rhodes at the Hotel Café Royal, Regent Street, London following her talk, ‘My Life in Fashion’. I was later thrilled to receive a couple of rolls of Zandra Rhodes designer labels printed with the words -
‘This garment has been produced by hand in Zandra Rhodes studio’.
I took the decision to assemble a portrait that reflected Zandra’s distinctive look and personality; focusing on her pink hair, blue make-up and theatrical jewellery. The result is contemporary, fun, playful, simple in design, yet detailed with 1000s of pre-loved pink and blue woven labels attached individually to the stretched canvas with dressmaker pins. Described by a viewer as ‘A slice of pink extravagance’, the unusual pinning technique reflecting on intricate garment design and construction.
The portrait measures 30cm wide x 90cm high, and includes pre-loved pink and blue garment size tabs sustainably sourced from manufacturers overs.
